What Does This Committee Do?

The Air Safety, Health, & Security Committee (ASHS) works with the company on matters related to cabin and Flight Attendant safety and health.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Acts in an advisory role to the MEC on safety matters

  • Studies local air safety and health problems and prepares recommendations to be presented to the MEC for consideration

  • Reviews material, handles correspondence, and keeps the membership well informed of current safety developments. Provides information to the Communications Committee for inclusion in Local Council communications.

  • Attends management debriefings when safety related issues are discussed

MEC - Communications

MEC COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

What Does This Committee Do?

The Communications Committee works to maintain regular and timely communication with the membership through relevant channels including print, web, social media, and emerging platforms.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Act in an advisory role to the MEC regarding communications issues

  • Serve as a resource to the MEC and local committee members on best practices involving communication with the membership including copyright issues, photo permissions, spam, and privacy policies.

  • Maintain the MEC/LEC website and social media presence

  • Update website and social media content regularly. Be able to make updates on short notice.

  • Create and distribute regular electronic informational updates to the Flight Attendants and maintain email lists

  • Handle correspondence from local committees regarding current happenings and information of interest and compile for use in informational updates

  • Promote new means of communication between AFA-CWA and the members including SMS, Twitter, Facebook, and other emerging platforms

MEC Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

MEC Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Team

What Does This Committee Do?

The EAP is a support service provided by Flight Attendants for Flight Attendants, their families, and partners.  EAP peer representatives are trained to provide three distinct, but interrelated, service that include assessment, support, and referral services, professional standards, and critical incident response.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assessment, Support, and Referral Services

    • Assist members in identifying and developing an action plan to address personal and work-related concerns

    • Provide support to a troubled flight attendant (TFA) during the problem resolution process

    • When professional services or resources are required, identify an appropriate referral(s) and facilitates the TFA’s successful linkage to it

  • Professional Standards

    • Offer a range of conflict resolution strategies, skills, and support to help co-workers resolve disputes among themselves without the need of management intervention

  • Critical Incident Response

    • Offer and/or coordinate a range of critical incident stress management services to promote and accelerate recovery in the aftermath of traumatic and/or critical incidents, both on and off the job

MEC Hotel & Transportation

MEC HOTEL & TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE

What Does This Committee Do?

The Hotel Committee investigates Flight Attendant complaints about hotel facilities and transportation providers and periodically inspects these facilities for any decline in quality.  Members of this committee survey potential facilities and attempt to eliminate or avoid any possible problems involving transportation or layover facilities.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Act in an advisory role to the MEC regarding hotel and transportation issues

  • Monitor and investigate Flight Attendant write-ups of issues involving hotels, transportation, and any associated safety concerns

  • Review current and potential future layover sites for compliance with contract language

  • Coordinate with the Grievance Committee regarding any possible contractual violations concerning hotel or transportation issues on members’ behalf

  • Attend management briefings and coordinate with management counterparts regarding union input to potential future accommodations

MEC LANGUAGE COMMITTEE

What Does This Committee Do?

This Committee identifies and investigates legal and social problems that affect our language Flight Attendant group.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The Language Committee is responsible for researching and recommending improvements to present programs through collective bargaining, legal or any other means that affect our Members and report these to the Master Executive Council (MEC).

MEC LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

What Does This Committee Do?

The Government Affairs Committee’s responsibility is to monitor and pursue legislative activities that relate to the AFA-CWA political agenda and to build positive relationships with candidates for office and elected officials.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Make suggestions on initiatives that could be pursued in legislative affairs and political matters at the MEC and local level. All problems/issues shall be discussed with the MEC and LEC Government Affairs Committees for coordination at the airline level, or for processing at the AFA-CWA International level

  • Schedule and attend meetings with local elected officials and key staff

  • Act on and follow through on directives as established in the AFA-CWA Constitution & Bylaws and FlightPAC

  • Provide information about the FlightPAC program to Local Council Members. Coordinate enrollment for members who wish to participate.

  • Act on recommendations of the AFA-CWA Director of Government Affairs and AFA-CWA Legislative Policy Committee

  • Offer timely communications and reports to the LEC regarding the status of local activities

  • Review material, handle correspondence, and keep the membership well informed of current legislative developments through the Communications Committee and reports at Local Council meetings

MEC Preferential Bidding System (PBS) Committee

What Does This Committee Do?

The PBS Committee works with the company and the Inflight Crew Planning Department to maintain the company’s preferential bidding system and oversee the bidding and bid award processes.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Regularly communicate with and provide updates to the MEC

  • Keep members knowledgeable about changes to the preferential bidding system, common mistakes and errors, misunderstandings about the system, and other topics of interest

  • Provide assistance to Flight Attendants through base sits, one-on-one training sessions, and telephone support during the monthly bidding window and as requested by the MEC or LECs

  • Communicate with the LEC Presidents to understand the needs and challenges of Flight Attendants holding reserve schedules and provide bid assistance

What Does This Committee Do?

The Retirement Committee assists members with questions regarding retirement, 401(k) plans, and other investment vehicles that may become available and keep members up-to-date and educated about these programs.​

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Act in an advisory role to the MEC regarding retirement issues

  • Encourage full participation of the Flight Attendants in available retirement benefit plans. Assist Flight Attendants with plan enrollment as needed.

  • Answer questions about retirement, applicable procedures, contractual language, 401(k) plans, and other related topics

  • Monitor compliance of the retirement plan with contractual language and the federal law to the extent possible

  • Remain up-to-date on changes to the retirement plan, plan vendor, and applicable government regulations

  • Review material, handle correspondence, and keeps the membership well informed of current retirement developments through the Communications Committee and reports at Local Council meetings

What Does This Committee Do?

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

The Grievance Team's primary responsibilities are to protect all Flight Attendants against arbitrary and unjust disciplinary action, and to uphold the collective bargaining agreement.

  • Represent and assist Flight Attendants in investigations, disciplinary hearings, and other meetings with the Company.

  • Screen scheduling clarification forms for potential violations of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Submit grievances on behalf of Flight Attendants.

What Does This Committee Do?

The Uniform Committee is responsible for ensuring contract language compliance for Flight Attendants in the area of uniforms.  The Committee is also charged with representing Flight Attendant interests to management regarding design, fabric selection, and other details of the flight attendant uniform.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Acts in an advisory role to the MEC regarding uniform issues

  • Ensure current contract language is followed regarding uniforms

  • Monitor and investigate Flight Attendant write-ups of issues involving uniforms

  • Answer Flight Attendant inquiries regarding uniform items, changes, etc.
